Immigropoly – The Migration Game
Unique Internet-based tool to understand more about migration and integration in our global world
More new immigrants arrive in Hungary every year from all over the world. The national media do not seem to concentrate on current issues of migration, therefore, the Hungarian society is not sufficiently informed on the number of third-country immigrants, their reasons for emigration. In the 1970s and 1980s hundreds of African students, for instance, received state-financed grants to study in Hungary, and many of them chose to stay in the country, and they work to intensify cultural and economic relations between the two regions to this day.
The primary aim of the Immigropoly online game is to present third-country migration processes in an informative, professionally balanced way to members of the Hungarian and European society. The Immigropoly provides information on third-country migration trends in a context of ecological, economic and social relations. With the migration game we aim to present the current trends of migration, the immigration policies of Hungary and the EU, the social attitudes and available statistics. We conducted interviews with third-country immigrants working in the cultural and scientific sphere and with NGOs, and their (hi)stories are included in the game.
The development of the online game Immigropoly started in 2009. It is not only a free-time activity, but has also proven to be a versatile educational tool touching on various issues from the fields of Social Sciences in general, and Sociology, Psychology, History, Cultural and Ecopolitical Studies in particular. The work started with the necessary primary and secondary research on third-country migration trends and the main factors affecting emigration from the African continent, and other parts of our globe. These contained many historical, sociological, economic and personal-emotional elements. We also recorded interviews with third-country immigrants living in Hungary and professionals working for NGOs that deal with related issues.
No other similar project, especially one dealing with issues of integration of 3rd-country immigrants exists. The Immigropoly proved to be fruitful in reducing the mistrust immigrants have to face. The online game successfully reached the young target group and provided information that can effectively combat discrimination and xenophobia and give an insight into the processes of international migration and integration.
In the game there are several routes players can choose from, on which they can guide their characters towards Hungary or other parts of the EU, where they successful integrate into the host society. In the cities/towns the characters visit they conduct interactive dialogues with local people, which provide interesting facts and figures about the policies, histories and cultures of the countries, and also about the migration-related regulations of the European Union.
The project fosters thinking in cooperative terms! It encourages players and readers, participants of the discussions we generate to understand the potentials of cooperation for the sake of successful integration.
