The debate academy idea showed up in 2011…
Since 2011 the Faculty of Humanities, University of Pécs launched closer collaboration with SIEN Foundation and involved the summer school into its official program line, recognizing it with the 7 ECTS points issued to the active participants. Organizing it we gained plenty of ideas, which led to new concepts and new applications. This year the highlight of the summer school was the Diplomats’ Round Table, which was a special debate edition, ambassadors participated in the debate.
In 2012 the main theme of the summer school focused on the topics of energy security, environmental economic and socio-political sustainability. The title ‘Energy – Policies for a secure future’ was carefully chosen to incorporate topics from different disciplines. Sub-topics focus on the viewpoints of economy, law, international studies, political sciences and medicine. The key lectures were held by acclaimed scientists, together with young professionals and civil activists leading the workshops, discussions and field visits. This year we organized already two main debate events: the Oil Debate and Atom Debate.
From 2013 the summer school profile has been transformed into a Debate Summer Academy, which is a unique initiative both on the local and regional levels and as a first-year debate event, it has contained a wide range of challenges for the organisers. In 2013 the topic of the first Debate Summer Academy was “Culture and Diplomacy in Our Global World”. This central theme was analysed in the form of lectures, cultural institute and embassy presentations, and a constant flow of debates. The debate instructions were given in trainings and introduction courses. The level of learning and debating was planned for novice, aiming to involve all those, who wished to have a deeper insight into cultural diplomacy and British Parliamentary Debating without deeper background knowledge or previous BDP experience.
